About Crowle Peatland Railway

Crowle Peatland Railway is a heritage railway museum located on the peat moors of Crowle in North Lincolnshire, England. Established in 2016, the railway was created to preserve and celebrate the rich history of peat extraction in the Humberhead Peatlands, particularly the unique narrow-gauge railways that once transported peat across the moors. The museum is part of the Isle of Axholme and Hatfield Chase Landscape Partnership and has received support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and local organizations.

Historically, peat extraction in the region dates back to at least the medieval period, with turbary rights granted to local tenants in the 17th century. By the late 19th century, commercial peat operations had expanded significantly, leading to the formation of the British Moss Litter Company in 1896. This company installed a network of 3-foot gauge tramways to move cut peat from the moors to processing facilities. Initially horse-drawn, these tramways were later upgraded with locomotives in the 1950s and 60s, marking a shift in industrial practices.

The Crowle Peatland Railway showcases a variety of restored locomotives and rolling stock, including Schöma diesel engines and historic peat wagons. The museum also features a maintenance shed, a Romney hut, and interpretive displays that educate visitors about the ecological and industrial significance of the peatlands. Events such as open days, seasonal celebrations, and volunteer opportunities help engage the local community and visitors alike.

Located at The Old Peatworks in Crowle, the railway offers a unique glimpse into the intersection of natural history and industrial heritage. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity of past generations and the importance of preserving fragile peatland ecosystems. Whether you're a railway enthusiast, history buff, or nature lover, Crowle Peatland Railway provides a fascinating and educational experience in the heart of Lincolnshire.
