About Alkborough Flats

Alkborough Flats is a remarkable wetland nature reserve located at the confluence of the Rivers Trent and Ouse, where they merge to form the Humber Estuary in North Lincolnshire. Once arable farmland, the site was transformed in 2006 through a managed realignment scheme led by the Alkborough Flats Partnership, including the Environment Agency, Natural England, and North Lincolnshire Council. This innovative project involved breaching river defences to create a flood storage area that also serves as a thriving habitat for wildlife.

Alkborough Flats is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The site features expansive reedbeds, wet grasslands, and intertidal zones that attract a wide variety of bird species throughout the year. Visitors can spot marsh harriers, bearded tits, avocets, spoonbills, and large flocks of wintering waterfowl such as teal, wigeon, and golden plovers 2. The area also supports mammals like otters, water voles, and brown hares, making it a rich and diverse ecosystem.

The reserve is well-equipped for public access, with footpaths, bird hides—including a striking tower hide—and panoramic views from Julian’s Bower, an ancient turf maze overlooking the site. While some paths are limited in accessibility, the site remains open year-round and offers a peaceful setting for walking, photography, and quiet observation of nature.

Beyond its ecological value, Alkborough Flats plays a vital role in flood management, helping to protect thousands of homes in the region. It stands as a successful example of how environmental engineering can work in harmony with conservation goals. Whether you're a seasoned birder or simply seeking a tranquil escape into nature, Alkborough Flats offers a unique and inspiring experience.
